Aikane is An Ancient Hawaiian Title That Was Used For Same Sex Relationships. The Term Aikane Was Used To Describe Ho`omaka, Lawakua and Mahu, Which Describes Men Who Were Involved In Close Social or Sexual Relationships. Because of This High Ranking and Noble Class The LGBTQ+ Community of Hawaii Celebrates Our Hawaiian Culture and Lineage.
The Ho`omau Ike Aikane Aloha Awards Seeks To Allow Our LGBTQ+ Community To Acknowledge and Recognize Individuals and Businesses Who Consistently Seek The Knowledge Through Love and Friendships In Order to Contribute, Inspire, Motivate and Serve Hawaii's LGBTQ+ Community in a Positive Manner and To Praise, Recognize and Acknowledge the Works of Our Unsung Heroes Who May Not Ordinarily Be Recognized By "Main Stream", Board Related or Other Awards.
The Spirit of the Ho`omau Ike Aikane Aloha LGBTQ+ Award Is To Truly Allow The Community To Recognize the Best of Gay Hawaii and Be The "People's Award" of the LGBTQ+ Community!
This Premiere LGBTQ+ Awards Program Was Founded and Created By Gay Island Guide In 2018 With Support of Local Community Members.
Award Nominations and Voting Are Open to The LGBTQ+ Community At-Large and Their Allies. All Nominations and Voting Are Done Online With Winners Announced At A Special Awards Reception.
After The Nomination Process All Nominees Are Reviewed To Ensure They Meet the Minimal Requirements of That Award Category and If So, They Are Included Into the Ballot For Voting.
In General the Ho`omau Ike Aikane Aloha LGBTQ+ Awards Are Awarded Based On the Number of Votes Received From the Community With Exception of Certain Premiere Awards Which May Have Additional Qualification Requirements.
To Protect the Integrity, Value and Purpose of the Ho`omau Ike Aikane Aloha LGBTQ+ Awards, Gay Island Guide Reserves The Right To Make Any Changes or Amendments to The Program At Any Time With or Without Notice.

All Individuals Must Reside in the State of Hawaii or Be An Active Duty Military Member Who Is Stationed In Hawaii. All Businesses, Groups or Organizations Must Have A Location or Regularly Do Business in the State of Hawaii.

The Na Alaka`i Kahua Award (The Leaders' Award) is the Most Prestigious Award Recognition of The Ho`omau Ike Aikane Aloha Awards. This Award Is Presented By Gay Island Guide in Tribute To A Leadership Camp That Our Founder Attended and Became a Staff Member of at Lahainalua on the Island of Maui. This Is Where He Credits Receiving Inspiration and Motivation to Be A Leader and the Value of Being A "Servant Leader" to Which All Should Be Included.
This Award Recognizes An Individual Who Embodies The Values of Being A Servant Leader in the LGBTQ+ Community. Someone Who Though May Not Be A Business Owner or Hold a Title is a Leader in His or Her Own Right.
The Na Alaka`i Kahua Award Recipient Will Ideally Embody and Practice All or a Majority of These Characteristics of Leadership in Serving The LGBTQ+ Community: Listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization,Foresight, Stewardship, Commitment to the Growth of People, Building Community and Humility.
The Ho`opohaku Pono (To Move Things Forward, To Make Right). This Legacy Award Is Presented To An Individual Who Has Contributed to the Betterment of Hawaii's LGBTQ+ Community in a Positive Manner. They Have Impacted the Community To Help Keep the Future Bright Whether Through Volunteering, Giving Care For, Financial, Political, or Other Forms.
The Lokomaika`i I Ka Ha (Service Community Through Breath) Award is Awarded to An Individual of the LGBTQ+ Community of Hawaii or Ally Who Is In the Service of the Greater Community. They Demonstrate the Ability to Be A Role Model, Show The Love of Service and Someone Who Demonstrates Love and Kindness to all People Regardless of Their Orientation, Race or Similar. This Recipient May Be, But is Not Limited To A Police Officer, EMT, Firefighter, Military Member, A Volunteer or Any LGBTQ Community Member or Ally.
The Malama Kupuna Award is Given to An Individual Who Has Demonstrated Their Commitment to The Service of Our Kupuna (Elders) and Especially Someone Who Has Directly or Indirectly Has Contributed to the Service and Care of LGBTQ+ Elders. This Award Recipient May Be But Is Not Limited To: A Nurse, A Doctor, A Care Giver, or Even A Family Member or Friend.
The Future of Our Community Is Very Important. This Premiere Malama Opi`o Award is Awarded to An Individual Who Has Demonstrated Their Commitment or Has Made An Impact For The Betterment of Our Community In the Service of Our Opi`o (Students) and Especially LGBTQ+ Children or Children of LGBTQ+ Families. This Recipient May Be A Teacher, Principal, Counselor, Volunteer, Coach or Ally.
One of Hawaii's Largest Economies Is Our Hospitality and Tourism Industry. Non-the-Less With the Ho`ohiwahiwa Aloha Award We Will Recognize An Individual Who Consistently Demonstrates A Positive Impact of Their Guests In Any Guest Service, Hospitality or Retail Industry or Similar Within Hawaii and Especially Someone Who Ensures A Positive Guest Experience Regardless of A Persons Orientation or Similar Classifications.
The History of Our LGBTQ+ Community and the Future of It Has Been Strengthened By Many Volunteers Over The Years. Many Programs, Organizations and Other Opportunities Would Not Be Possible Today Without Volunteers Who Mainly Work Behind the Scenes To Ensure A Positive Outlook of These Programs, Events, Organizations or Other Opportunities. In Many Cases, Our Volunteers Are Truly The Unsung Heroes and We Will Recognize Someone Within Our LGBTQ Community or Ally With This Special Award.
Hawaii's Best Bartender is Someone Who Demonstrates Consistently A Positive Guest Experience to LGBTQ Guests and Guests in General, Has Demonstrated Bartending Skills, Knowledge of Specialty Cocktails, Wines and Beers and Truly Stands Out As Being Hawaii's Best! This Bartender May Be From Any Bar, Nightclub, Hotel, Restaurant or Similar.
Hawaii's Best DJ Is Someone Who Has Demonstrated Their Commitment To Hawaii's LGBTQ+ Community and Their Knowledge of Music In Which Celebrates Our Heritage in Past, Present and Future. This Recipient May Have Also Provided Services or Has Volunteered For Programs, Services or Events That Benefits Hawaii's LGBTQ+ Community. This Award May Be an LGBTQ+ Community Member or Ally.
It Is No Secret That the Hawaii LGBTQ+ Community and Our Allies Are Full of Talented Musical Artist! This Award Celebrates A Hawaii Musician, Music Group, or Instrument Player Who Has Demonstrated Musical Talent and Has Contributed to Our LGBTQ+ Community and the Community As A Whole Through Being A Role Model and Positive Influence.
If There's One Thing We All Enjoy Is Great Food! One of the Many Hidden Talents of Our LGBTQ+ Community That Is Not Celebrated Enough is the Great Talents of Our Chefs, Cooks and Other Culinary Arts Professionals and Hobbyist. This Award Seeks To Recognize the Talent of An LGBTQ+ Community Member In This Area for Their Commitment to Their Art Form and Their Quality Recipes, Methodology, or Presentation of Ensuring the Future of Culinary Arts in Hawaii.

This Award Recipient May Be But Is Not Limited To: Care Homes, Hospice, Hospitals, Medical Clinics, Or Any Other Related Organization Committed to the Service and Care of Our Elders.
The Future of Our Community Is Very Important. This Premiere Malama Opi`o Award is Awarded to A Business, Group or Organization Who Has Demonstrated Their Commitment or Has Made A Positive Impact For The Betterment of Our Community In the Service of Our Keiki (Children) and Especially LGBTQ+ Children or Children of LGBTQ+ Families.
The Prestigious Ike Lokomaika`i Award Recognizes a Business, Group or Organization as Being Hawaii's Best LGBTQ+ Friendly Employer. This Employer Will Have Policies and Practices In Place That Help To Protect All Employees (Especially Those of Our LGBTQ+ Community) From Harassment, Discrimination, Bullying or Other Negative Forms of Disrespect. This Employer Makes All Employees Feel Welcome and Valued Regardless of Their Sexual Orientation or Similar Classifications and Provides For A Positive Work Environment.

Many Services, Programs and Events Would Not Be Possible Without Hawaii's Non-Profit Organizations. Though All Are Very Important, The Award Will Recognize One Organization That The Community Acknowledges For Their Positive Contributions and Betterment of Hawaii's LGBTQ+ Community and Its People Through Its Work, Programs, Services or Events.
This Award Will Recognize the Venue in Which Our Community Views As Hawaii's Best Venue To See or Enjoy The Performing Arts, Shows or LIVE Music Regardless Of Our Orientation or Any Other Classification.
